Ten years on, Americans gathered in mass to remember where the World Trade Centers soared, the Pentagon stands as a fortress once breached, and where United Airlines Flight 93 knifed into the earth.
They came together to pray in the cathedrals of our greatest cities, lay roses before the fire stations in our smallest towns, and remember in countless ways the anniversary of the most devastating terrorist attacks since the nation’s founding.
As in earlier observances, bells tolled again to mourn the loss of those killed.
